Why Become a CA > CASB's Education Program
CASB's Education Program
Not only is the CA designation the standard for accounting excellence—our education program through the CA School of Business (CASB) is world class! The CASB program is comparable to getting a graduate degree, but you won’t have to spend another year or more in the classroom to complete it. You won’t have to accumulate more student loans or drop out of the workforce either. You’ll have a full-time job and earn a full-time salary, while enhancing your learning in the CASB program with on-the-job experience.
In the CASB program, there are no boring lessons or tedious coursework. Instead, you’ll take on relevant challenges by assuming an online identity and working for a simulated company, Vision Windows Ltd (Vision). Enjoy the flexibility of online learning with one-on-one instruction as well as group interaction, supplemented by face-to-face contact. Even though the work is “virtual,” you’ll be able to use the skills you learn progressively through the program in practical applications while articling. This experience will also provide the best possible preparation for success on the national uniform evaluation (UFE).
Role-playing is a large part of the learning process in the CASB program, as it helps place you firmly in the type of “real-world” situations you might often face in the workplace as a CA. As you progress through the CASB modules, you'll take on different roles including employee or manager of Vision, employee of various Public Practice Firms engaged to complete a wide range of services including assurance, compilation, consulting, taxation, or valuation services for the business and its owners, or an auditor from CRA, to name a few. As you progress through CASB’s six core modules, you’ll develop and apply the knowledge and skills you’ve gained so far in research, analysis, problem-solving, interpretation, forecasting, leadership, innovation, strategic management, governance, control and risk management, finance, performance measurement, taxation, management decision-making, information technology, and assurance. All modules in the CASB program recognize that most roles and tasks in the normal course of a CA’s work are complex and integrated, and not simple, single-subject problems in one area.
This “competency-based” approach to education is designed to train and evaluate students based on their effectiveness as potential CAs, rather than on their ability to memorize obscure accounting rules or cram for exams. Instead of trying to measure how much the candidate “knows,” the competency-based approach is designed to measure how much the candidate can “do”—a much more accurate measure of understanding. CASB student evaluation mirrors as closely as possible the type of performance evaluation a student might receive on the job.
The CASB program will expose you to the challenges and issues faced by a variety of organizations of all sizes, and you will learn how to effectively manage the various stages of growth and transition. When you graduate, your ability to apply your knowledge on the job will make you extremely valuable to employers.
In addition to preparing you to achieve the highest levels of technical competence, the CASB program places equal emphasis on ethics and professionalism. CAs and CASB students are expected to adhere, at all times, to the highest standards of ethics and professional excellence—these standards are the basic tenets of the CA profession.
