Jessica Jang, CA

What I enjoy most about my job as a CA is the ability to help others. Every day, I get the chance to help my clients succeed by providing them with suggestions and advice on improving their business operations. I also enjoy having the opportunity to work with many different industries. I work in the Vancouver Audit and Assurance Group of BDO Dunwoody LLP, and no two days at work are ever the same. Even though it’s still early in my career, I’ve already worked with not-for-profits, private and public companies, and government entities.

Given the range of experiences you’re exposed to in public practice, I think it’s the best learning environment for a young person interested in a career in business. Even before you earn your CA, you get to play a key role in client services!

How I got here

While completing my bachelor of commerce degree at the University of British Columbia, I attended a CA Night information session on campus. That was my first real introduction to the CA designation. I met cool people and learned a lot about what CAs actually do—the “big picture” stuff that many people don’t know about. I knew then that it was the right path for me, so after completing my bachelors degree, I took the CA School of Business (CASB) prerequisite courses offered by UBC’s Diploma in Accounting Program. In 2005, I secured an articling position with BDO Dunwoody, and in 2009, I earned my CA designation.

Tons of support while training

After I finished writing the Uniform Evaluation (UFE) in 2008, I had no idea how I had done. I guess you could say I was in a bit of post-exam fog. So when the results were announced, I was thrilled to discover that I’d made the National Honour Roll. My advice now to future writers is to try to maintain a positive attitude throughout the UFE process, as there will be days when you doubt yourself and your abilities. And be sure to use the support system at your disposal—you’ll find support in other students, your firm, the CASB program, and the BC Institute of CAs. I know I did!
